BLACK BEAN PATTIES

Ingredients
  • Dried Black Beans - 1 Cup Yields 2.5 Cups after soaking and cook
  • OR
  • Store Bought Can Beans - 1-16-ounce can black beans = 1&1/2 cups drained
  • Mixed Bell Pepper - 1 Cup chopped
  • Onion - 1 Medium chopped finely
  • Chopped Garlic - 3-5 Cloves
  • Red Chili Powder or Paprika - 1-2tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1tsp
  • OR
  • Seasoned Salt - 1/2tsp
  • Cumin Powder - 1/4tsp Optional
  • Bread Crumbs - 3/4 Cup
  • Dry Parmesan Cheese Powder - 1/4 Cup
  • Salt - As Needed
Instructions
How to Prepare Black bean Patties
  1. In a food processor or using knife finely chop bell pepper, onion, garlic. and coriander leaves (Pic 1)
  2. Heat a pan, add little oil, when its hot crackle cumin seeds.
  3. Add finely chopped onion, garlic and capsicum.
  4. Once its translucent add the spice mix powder (pic 2), salt and finely chopped coriander leaves.
  5. Let this mixture cool.
  6. Meanwhile grind the cooked and water drained black beans in food processor and add it to a wide mixing bowl (Pic 3).
  7. Add the sautéed mixture to it.
  8. Also add Parmesan cheese powder and bread crumbs.
  9. Mix everything well (Pic 4) and If needed you can sprinkle some water.
  10. Also adjust salt and you can add more red chili powder if you wish.
  11. Once done and everything turns as shown in stepwise Pic 1 (below), now it’s time to shape the patties.
How to Shape the Patties
  1. Grease your palm and working surface with oil.
  2. Take a big lemon size ball (Pic 1) and flat it on a working surface(Pic 2).
  3. Gently shape between your palms (Pic 3).
  4. Shape the edges to make it round using your fingers (pic 3).
  5. Also you can flat it using flat bottom pan and make it even shape for even cooking(Pic 4).
  6. Hold the patty one side and roll it like shown in pictures or in video tutorial, so that the edges will score the perfect shape.
  7. For the patterned patties, do flat a ball gently.
  8. Roll them using patterned rolling pin (Pic 5) , also trim the excess using bowl (Pic 6, refer video tutorial).
  9. Shaping is clearly explained in the video tutorial for both plain and shaped patties.
  10. Keep the rolled patties on a non sticky paper/wax paper/parchment paper (Picture above).
How To Cook Black Bean Patties
  1. If grilling, preheat an outdoor grill for high heat and lightly oil a sheet of aluminum foil and grill by flipping both sides until its done.
  2. If baking, preheat oven to 375°F/190°C and lightly oil/spray a baking sheet and bake till done, say 3-5 minutes on each side..
  3. For this thick patties I bake 10minutes on one side flip and bake other side the same 10minutes.
  4. To shallow fry use cast iron pan or dosa pan, drizzle some oil.
  5. Add the shaped patties gently like shown in Picture 1.
  6. I medium flame cook the patties (Pic 2) by flipping both sides.
  7. Whenever necessary drizzle more oil.
  8. Also do cook on the sides of the patties like shown in Picture 3.
  9. Cook the patties till it turns golden brown as shown in Pic 4.
  10. Serve the patties with burger buns, sliced tomato, lettuce and optional cheese slices or spread some butter (Pic 4).
