Homegrown Horse Gram Sprouts முளை கட்டிய கொள்ளு

October 27, 2014 By Sangeetha Priya 14 Comments

Hope everyone had a wonderful Diwali celebration!!! After a short break today I am with a healthy homegrown Horse gram sprouts / Kollu sprouts at home. Also I have added a small proportion of whole moong dal

mulai katiya kollu horsegram sprouts

with it. I used those sprouts in several recipes that I will come up in next posts, so stay tuned!!! Meanwhile I have sprouts based recipes do check here. Old post updated with recent pictures and a video.

Ingredients

Kollu/Horse Gram – 1 Cup
Green Gram/Moong Bean – 1/4 Cup (Optional)

Learn to make Horse gram Sprouts

  • Wash the horse gram and green gram.
  • Kollu sometimes has stone so remove those and soak them separately for 8 hours at least or overnight.
  • Drain the excess water; here i placed the soaked grams over the sieve (Pic 1), also I placed it over a glass bowl to drain water completely (Pic 1).
  • Once drained well, pat dry in a cotton cloth for 15 minutes at least (Pic 2).
  • Mix both grams or either one and place in the same sieve (we say jalladai in tamil) over a glass bowl (refer video) or tie in a light wet cloth by piercing some hole all over it or muslin cloth.
  • Leave it as it is in a dark warm room for 6- 8 hours, after 6 hours you can see sprouts as shown in picture 3.
  • On and off you can lightly wet the cloth, depends on the temperature the sprouts grow, once the cloth dried out completely just sprinkle some water.
  • You can increase the timing like 10 hours to get lengthy sprouts (Pic 4).
  • Once done use it immediate or refrigerate for 1-2 days in Ziploc bag, for longer use you have to freeze it.
  • I never freeze sprouts, plan and make needed quantity and for me its good in refrigerator for 4 days.
